Hadrian's Arch Athens is a monumental gateway that stands as a symbol of the city’s vast history. Located on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street between two of the city’s major landmarks, the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch is considered to be one of most iconic archaeological sites in all of Greece. Built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in 131 AD to celebrate his visit to Athens and designate the boundary between the old city and new Roman additions, this stunning monument has served as an important landmark for centuries. Its timeless marble facade stands at 16 meters high and 11 meters wide, with four rectangular pillars topped with Corinthian capitals flanking a carved archway. On either side of the arch are inscriptions dedicated to gods and goddesses who were considered patrons of both Athens and Rome. Above the arch is an impressive relief depicting Emperor Hadrian surrounded by various figures from ancient Greek mythology. While much of its original beauty has been restored, some damage can still be seen from when it was used as a target during Ottoman rule in 15th century. Thanks to its historical significance, Hadrian’s Arch is now an integral part of many tours through Athens and remains an impressive reminder of the city’s rich past.
